 Our Rebirth

Sunday, Feb. 5th, 2017 – Pastor Brian’s message examined “What will I Be Like in Heaven?” Unfortunately, I wasn’t physically well enough to attend this Sunday morning so I’m unable to reflect upon any aspects of his message. I will, however, employ one of his scripture passages and apply it to our recovery.

(2 Corinthians 5:16-19)
So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting men’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation.

Clearly, Paul’s description of us in Christ as “a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” is critical to our sobriety. We must make a change, a transformation, from the person we were to an entirely different way of life.
  • Question 1 – Unfortunately, this transformation is not permanent. What are the challenges in maintaining our new life step by step, day by day?
Reconcile – “To make consistent or congruous.” With this definition in mind, study 2 Corinthians 5:16-19 relative to the following question.
  • Question 2 – What does God’s reconciliation mean relative to our recovery?
    • “… reconciled us to himself …”
    • ” … gave us the ministry of reconciliation: …”
“Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God … praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.”

  • Question 3 – How does the above stated effort empower us to approach the challenges identified in question #1?
“Having had a spiritual awakening … we tried to carry this message to alcoholics, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.”
  • Question 4 – Is God reconciling us to himself a spiritual awakening? Explain.
  • Question 5 – Explain the connection between God giving us the ministry of reconciliation and our effort to carry this message to alcoholics/addicts, and the continued practice of these principles in all our affairs.
